Of all the wheels I saw at Interbike, none were as impressive as the hoops from Rolf Prima. Not heard of Rolf Prima before? Well, listen up. Rolf Prima has been cranking out beautiful, wheelsets for nearly two decades from their Eugene, Oregon headquarters.
Looking over their array of carbon clinchers, I’ve never seen more beautiful hoops. Each rim is almost artistic how the layers of carbon are laid up with a finished product that appears like a twisted barber pole. And, as owners of several patented technologies, each wheel is then built with Paired Spoke technology that reduces spoke count while making the wheels truer and easier to maintain. Watch the following video to learn more about Paired Spokes.
The all-new 42 mm Ares4 ES (taller Ares6 ES also available) wheels feature everything that makes Rolf Prima wheels so special, but in a more economical package. Built with the same carbon clincher rims as the more expensive Ares4 wheels, the $650 price difference is achieved by utilizing their less-expensive forged alloy TdF3.0 hubset that features stainless cartridge bearings and stainless QR’s. The Ares4 ES also gets 20 paired spokes on the rear wheel instead of 16.
After looking both the Ares4 and Ares4 ES over in person, it’s apparent just how high-zoot the Ares4 wheels are, but also how class-leading the Ares4 ES models remain. At only a 70 gram weight penalty, these hand built wheels are still coming in at an ultra-competitive $1849/set.
