Colnago V1-R: Aero and Lightweight Refined by Ferrari

Colnago V1-R

The all-new Colnago V1-R was introduced ahead of this year’s Tour de France. Several riders of Team Europcar (including Thomas Voeckler) rode the V1-R during Le Tour.

Building an aero road bike required a bit of a departure for Colnago. To be as slippery as possible, the frame is entirely monocoque with none of the trademark Colnago lugged tube intersections. I say it looks quite handsome and the aero benefits are easily understood.

Tube shapes were selected specifically by Ferrari engineers who are experts in both aerodynamic and lightweight materials. The generous downtube utilizes a Kamm Tail design for proven wind-cheating performance. All other tubes were optimized for wind-cheating, but (at least by the naked eye) don’t feature much in the way of extreme aerodynamic shaping.

Based on the stellar aerodynamic performance that both the Cervelo RCA/R5 and Scott Addict achieve without extreme aero tube shapes, I’d say the V1-R is on par with those bikes.

Colnago V1-R -- Collaboration with Ferrari

Every portion of the carbon layup was optimized by Colnago and Ferrari engineers for both aesthetics and optimal performance. And, something cool about such a high-end frame — it is available in standard or disc brakes.

On the rim brake side, Colnago has opted for direct-mount caliper brakes front and rear. The rearward brake is mounted under the chain stays — presumably for aerodynamic performance (but, annoying to maintain). The nice thing about that is it makes things easier when drawing up the changes necessary for disc brakes.

Colnago V1-R Disc Version

On the disc brake side, the V1-R is optimized for 140mm rotors (but may be 160mm compatible with adapters). Up front, the fork gets a thru-routed brake hose and 15mm axle via Manitou’s HexLock15 axle. The rear remains standard QR with a post-mount on the chain stays.

The seatpost is said to be a 27.2 design, but is a proprietary, aero shape. It appears to be a 20mm setback post, but I’m not certain if a zero setback option is also available.

Colnago V1-R Features:
